Vietnam's fruit, veggie exports surge in past 5 months

By:Xinhua   Update:2017-06-01
Vietnam is poised to earn nearly 1.4 billion U.S. dollars from exporting fruits and vegetables in the first five months of this year, up 38 percent year-on-year, said its Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Monday.

Vietnam's fruit and veggie export turnovers to China in the five-month period rose 36.8 percent, and those to the United Arab Emirates and Russia increased 2.1 times, and 76.3 percent, respectively.

China, the United States, Japan and South Korea are the four main markets for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, accounting for 83.8 percent of the total export revenue, said the ministry.

In the domestic market, in May, litchi is sold at 50,000-60,000 Vietnamese dong (2.2-2.6 U.S. dollars) per kilograms, up 5,000 Vietnamese dong (22 U.S. cents) against the same period last year.

Every year, China consumes some 90 percent of Vietnamese litchi output. The fruit is mainly grown in Vietnam's northern Bac Giang, Hai Duong and Hung Yen provinces.

From January to May, Vietnam is estimated to spend 470 million U.S. dollars importing fruits and vegetables, up 68.6 percent on-year, said the ministry.
