JAKARTA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Track laying of the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway (HSR) has begun in Bandung Regency, Indonesia's West Java province, the railway's operator has said.

A statement released on Wednesday by the KCIC, a joint venture consortium between Chinese and Indonesian state-owned firms, said the track laying of the railway is an important stage and marks a solid step towards the track laying of the whole line.

The KCIC said the total track laying of the 142-km HSR is 279.4 km, including 112.8 km of ballasted track section and 166.6 km of ballastless track.

According to the KCIC, all the 50-meter steel rails used in the project are produced in China, with a total of 11,810 pieces weighing 35,881 tons. After being delivered to Indonesia, the 50-meter rails will be welded into 500-meter-long rails.

The KCIC said 12 tunnels have been built along the railway and more than 91 percent of the civil engineering projects have been completed.

Besides, more than 80 percent of the box girder erection has been finished, 74.6 percent of the 500-meter-long rails have been welded, and the station building and other engineering works have been steadily proceeded.

With a design speed of 350 km per hour, the HSR built with Chinese technology will cut the journey between Jakarta and Bandung, capital of West Java province, from more than three hours to around 40 minutes.
