Myanmar encourages Thai investors to go for agriculture, tourism in Shan state

By:Xinhua   Update:2016-12-09
BANGKOK, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is encouraging Thai investors to venture in agriculture and tourism in Shan state.

Pakaimas Vierra, vice chairwoman of Thailand's Chiang Rai Provincial Chamber of Commerce, said on Wednesday the Myanmar authorities had recommended Thais to invest in agricultural and livestock sector as well as tourist industry inside Shan state.

Pakaimart led officials of the Thai Department of Foreign Trade and businesspersons in a recent trip to Shan state to view the investment climate and meet with the Myanmar authorities in the predominantly ethnic state.

Shan state, earlier noted for chronic war between Myanmar government forces and ethnic rebel groups, has planned to build a major road to link Kengtung province, which borders China and Laos, with the state capital Taunggyi, about 480 kilometers northwest of Chiang Saen district of Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand.

In addition, Shan state's eastern township of Tachileik is currently a major trading point across Mekong River from Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai.
