70 pct of roads, bridges in Cambodia built under Chinese support: transport minister

PHNOM PENH, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian transport minister Sun Chanthol said Friday that about 70 percent of national roads and bridges in Cambodia had been constructed under the concessional loans from China.

"In Cambodia, more than 2,000 km of roads, seven river bridges, and a Phnom Penh Autonomous Port's new container terminal have been already built under the concessional loans from the People's Republic of China," he said, adding that since 2004, China had lent Cambodia more than 2 billion U.S. dollars for road and bridge development.

Currently, another four road and bridge projects were under construction with Chinese loans, he said.

He added that Chinese support was crucial for Cambodia, not only to connect transport infrastructure locally, but also to link the nation's transport infrastructure to its neighboring countries.

According to Chanthol, Cambodia's infrastructure development was also in line with the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

The minister made the remarks when he received mechanical equipments for road and bridge maintenance donated by China's Henan Transport Investment Group Co., Ltd.
