China Formally Accepts Protocol of WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement

On June 27, 2023, Minister of Commerce of China Wang Wentao deposited China’s instrument of acceptance for the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies with Director-General of the WAorld Trading Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. This marked completion of China’s domestic legal ratification of the Agreement.

The Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies is the WTO’s first agreement focusing on environmental sustainable development goals. The Agreement was concluded at the twelfth Ministerial Conference of the WTO (MC12) on June 17, 2022. According to the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization, the Agreement will enter into force after acceptance by over two thirds of the WTO Members.
